https://www.ifpapinball.com/ifpa-to-glo ... arch-17th/

"To ensure the competitive pinball community stays safe and does all it can to help slow the spread of COVID-19, the IFPA has made the difficult decision to suspend the sanctioning of events.

This means that all IFPA events scheduled on or after Tuesday, March 17th, 2020, will not be sanctioned, approved, or result in the awarding of WPPR points. Results submitted for any event held March 16th, 2020, and prior will be approved as normal. We will revisit this decision on March 31st, 2020, and determine our continued course of action at that point.

We are also asking that Tournament Directors with pending calendar entries within that time frame please remove them via the tournament manager in order to ensure players do not think there is still a sanctioned event occurring. For TD’s worried about the 30-day advance notice rule, we will be waiving that rule once we have this situation behind us and begin sanctioning events again.

We are mindful of how difficult it has been for event organizers, directors, and small business owners to make decisions regarding current, planned, and future events. Based on the most recent information available, extreme social distancing measures are the recommended course of action in countries around the world, and any gathering for the purpose of competitive pinball is antithetical to those recommendations.

This decision was not made lightly. While some communities may not yet, or ever, feel the full impact of this pandemic, IFPA leadership feels that the organization has an ethical responsibility to take decisive action in slowing this virus’s spread.

We deeply value the feedback and guidance we received from our IFPA Country Directors, as well as TDs and players worldwide. We appreciate your flexibility, understanding, and support during this challenging moment."

For os i Danmark påvirker det pt. kun én turnering i Pinlab d. 31. marts.

https://www.ifpapinball.com/ifpa-sanctioned-events-suspended-until-further-notice/
"In light of ongoing restrictions and public health recommendations across the globe, the IFPA has decided to uphold the suspension of sanctioning for pinball tournaments and leagues for WPPR points until further notice.

We ask that Tournament Directors with pending calendar entries continue to remove them via the tournament manager in order to ensure that players do not think there is still a sanctioned event occurring. For TDs worried about the 30-day advance notice rule, we still plan on waiving that rule once we have this situation behind us and begin sanctioning events again.

https://www.ifpapinball.com/covid-19-update-may-2020-and-the-road-ahead/

"The IFPA Board of Directors continues to monitor the impacts of COVID-19 as we consider our path forward. We have received questions from the pinball community about the ongoing suspension of IFPA-sanctioned tournaments and leagues and what criteria we will use to determine when to end our suspension. While we do not plan to lift the suspension in the immediate future, we want to share some of our criteria for making this decision as well as offer some alternative avenues to encourage the continued enjoyment of competitive pinball.

We wish we were able to sanction events right now. Not only does our organization depend on competitive pinball in order to exist, pinball is a source of joy and community for each of us, and we are impacted by the absence of tournaments and leagues on both an organizational and a personal level. Given the close quarters and high-contact nature of pinball events, we recognize the heightened level of risk that they carry, and we are not comfortable incentivizing gathering in groups, regardless of size, to play pinball during a highly contagious pandemic.

Additionally, the IFPA is a global organization. While some regions are reopening or were not as severely impacted by the virus, we want to ensure that our plans to restart sanctioning are fair to all players. We rely on the expertise and guidance of our IFPA Country Directors and State Representatives to understand the situation on a regional basis, and we are listening to their input regarding whether they feel that tournaments and leagues are possible and prudent based on the specific realities of their communities. As of May 19th, our Country Directors and State Representatives are unanimous in their opinion that it is not safe to re-open IFPA sanctioning at this time. We will continue to consult them as the situation develops. All IFPA staff, country directors, and state representatives are volunteers, so please be respectful in offering your feedback as we navigate the re-opening process.
While we are honored that our work is a motivating factor in many players’ competitive pinball journeys, the IFPA does not control pinball tournaments and leagues outside of the sanctioning and ranking systems that we offer. If restrictions are eased in your area, you are welcome to gather for a pinball event within the guidelines of your local health authority. These events will not be worth WPPR points, but they can be for money, prizes, and/or glory. We appreciate the various ways the competitive community has innovated during our sanctioning hiatus, including Dead Flip’s virtual invitationals and Laura Fraley’s Quarantopia selfie league.

The IFPA is currently working on a campaign to reintroduce IFPA Challenge Matches as activity we will approve during this period where we are not sanctioning tournament and league play. We will share more about this initiative shortly, as we are very excited to start this on June 1st.

The IFPA will continue to monitor the situation closely and communicate with our Country Directors and State Reps to determine when it will be appropriate to restart our sanctioning process. Stay tuned for additional details in the coming months, and stay safe!"

2020 Season Update and Beyond
Posted By Josh Sharpe, on December 01, 2020

https://www.ifpapinball.com/2020-season ... nd-beyond/

"As the 2020 season comes to a close, we wanted to provide updates on various IFPA-related campaigns that the IFPA Board of Directors has been discussing as we enter the 2021 season. We’ve received many emails from players on a wide variety of topics and hope to answer most of those questions below:

Last week the participants of the IFPA17 World Pinball Championship were notified that we have once again postponed the event, which had previously been rescheduled for May 2021. The new dates for IFPA17 are November 11-14, 2021, still to be held at the Pinball Asylum in Florida.

The IFPA has no plans to organize any State, Provincial or Country Championships for the 2020 season of play. This includes North America and Australia, where the IFPA collected sanctioning fees for the first 3 months of the 2020 season. We will be rolling over that prize money into the 2021 season; however, the WPPR points earned in 2020 will NOT apply to the 2021 season qualifying.

The IFPA has no plans to organize an IFPA Women’s World Championship for the 2020 season of play. We will push forward with the hope that the 2021 qualifying season will result in a championship tournament in early 2022.

With respect to the WPPR formula and the decay used to reduce the value of events over time, the IFPA has no plans to adjust that formula in any way. Our ranking system is not designed to adjust for random local or global events, and as such, no changes will be made. We continue to rebuild the rankings on about a monthly basis, so the rankings continue to show where players stand based on the rules according to our current WPPR formula.

Due to the lack of sanctioned tournament play available in the 2020 season, there wasn’t a chance for players to play their way into qualifying for the IFPA Stern Rewards Program. Thanks to the generosity of Stern Pinball, everyone who qualified for Stern Rewards based on the 2019 season will once again qualify for the 2020 season. In addition, any eligible players that moved up into the top 1000 due to the decay of past results will also qualify for the IFPA Stern Rewards Program for the 2020 season.

Most importantly, we wanted to address our process for once again sanctioning tournament and league play globally. While some regions are reopening or were not as severely impacted by the virus, we want to ensure that our plans to restart sanctioning are fair to all players. We rely on the expertise and guidance of our IFPA Country Directors and State and Province Representatives to understand the situation on a regional basis, and we are listening to their input regarding whether they feel that tournaments and leagues are possible and prudent based on the specific realities of their communities. We have been tracking this feedback from our reps and intend to wait until a majority of the world has approved moving forward with sanctioned events before we consider reopening. Currently, based on our metrics, only 12% have voted to approve resuming sanctioned tournament play.

We continue to move forward with the IFPA Challenge Rankings (ICR), with December as the final month of qualifying. We encourage players to sign up if they are looking to scratch that competitive pinball itch, with over $700 in cash and prizes available. Details on the ICR are available HERE (https://www.ifpapinball.com/icr/).

Finally, we want to acknowledge that the 2020 season has been like no other in our organization’s history. We have said goodbye to iconic people, organizations, events, and locations. We have also seen pinball communities come together for support and connection, participating in the ICR and virtual tournaments, donating to fundraisers for pinball establishments, and continuing to stay connected through virtual events and live streams. While the future is still uncertain, we feel confident that sanctioned competitive pinball will return, and together we can take it to new heights. In the meantime, stay home, stay safe, wash your hands, and wear a mask."

"The main metric I've been looking at is the global population of IFPA players (of which North America is roughly 72% of that total). We're now at 49.58% of the world's population that is represented within an area that is deemed "okay to sanction events" based on the feedback from the IFPA Reps.

My plan was to look at this once we hit the 50% threshold, and based on how close we are, and the notices of additional areas being updated to YES on June 1st, I figured I would get this all out now.

Step 1 --> Evaluate that 50% to see where that 50% comes from. As an international organization, if that 50% is well represented across the globe, then I'd feel comfortable using this simple majority metric to trigger our re-opening plans

Anyone that is following the spreadsheet can see that unfortunately this is NOT the case, and that outside of Australia and New Zealand, it's only US States that have any areas approved for sanctioning - even Canada is at zero Yes votes currently.

Due to Step 1 not being optimal, my plan is to push from this simple majority to a super majority metric and wait for 60% of the IFPA global population to be in areas that are deemed okay to sanction.

Once we hit 60% then we'll set the global reopening date based on the following timeline:

If we hit 60% prior to the 15th of a given month, then sanctioning will begin on the 1st day of the following month. For example, if we cross 60% on June 11th, then sanctioning will begin on July 1st.

If we hit 60% after the 15th of a given month, then sanctioning will begin on the 1st day of the month after next. For example, if we cross 60% on June 19th, then sanctioning will begin on August 1st.

With the understanding that it's likely most of the world is going to be behind the US in being able to organize sanctioned events, we have postponed the IFPA18 World Championship until 2023. This means that players globally don't have to worry about chasing any kind of cut line at the end of the 2021 season.

In addition, based on not wanting to push players into any kind of frenzy of participation as we being sanctioning events again, the IFPA will be postponing any Corporate events until the 2022 season. This means that there will be no NACS, ECS or any other Country Championship Series based on the 2021 season. We don't want to put players in a position where they are chasing a cutline during the second half of this year, while putting themselves in a situation where they aren't really comfortable playing. This will allow people to slowly jump back into things as they feel comfortable without that pressure of needing to qualify for anything right away."
